Butler's gender performativity theory states that gender is not fixed and is created in how we perform our gender roles. This is presented through Nancy in Stranger things as she starts off stuck in her gender stereotype of a love interest to Steve but as the episode and series continues she presents her self as a 'Final girl' of Horror movies/ series subverting the gender roles.

Paul Gilroy's theory of ethnicity suggests an condensed version of colonial history that media presents with immigrants being portrayed as criminals  creating a 'us and them' way of thought.
