La Haine

La Haine's trailer uses a black and white colour scheme highlighting the repressive and dangerous reality of Paris. It contrasts the stereotypical view of Paris with a view of the city showing crime in a dirty chaotic place.

Black and white used to emphasize race

Hip-hop soundtrack

Intertextuality- Taxi driver, thrillers, horrors and westerns

soundtrack stopped mid way through and was replaced with ticking to build tension

Emily in Paris

Netflix original. An American girl travels to Paris. The trailer shows a stereotypical view of Paris depicting it as a happy city where you can do whatever you want and ignores all the bad sides of Paris. This is done to make it more appealing for a wider range of people made for an  America audience focusing on Love.

Emily in Paris has faced criticism for its cliched version of Paris

-Cold industrial lighting vs natural lighting

-Lupin with books in background reflects the literary heritage of the character

-Emily in Paris middle class female who doesn't speak French

-Lupin 4th most watched non English show on Netflix

Lupin was released in January in 2021 during the global pandemic when demand for home entertainment was high. The crime thriller genre offered escapism.

Lupin is considered France's answer to Sherlock Holmes but is also comparable to Robin hood only stealing from rich.

Assane Diop is played by Omar Sy

Both Sy and the character he plays are French Senegalese

Lupin intertwines representation of contemporary France with the historical legacy of French colonialism through culture and power imbalances
