Nintendo and Animal crossing context

Nintendo co., ltd , headquartered in Kyoto, Japan, has created franchises that have become household names worldwide. It has sold 5.5 billion games.

Estimated value of £55 billion - impressive, yet less than its competitors with Sony and Microsoft, who are large global conglomerates that diversify their income.

Animal crossing is the 13th highest selling game of all time. It released to critical acclaim, averaging 90/100 on review aggregator site, Metacritic.

Monetization

Nintendo originally resisted industry developments in monetization, avoiding the lucrative allure of 'loot boxes' and excessive dlc. Instead , Nintendo generally focused on releasing high quality, bug- free releases. However, recently Nintendo has capitalized on industry trends - they now charge £17.99 for Nintendo online, allowing users to visit other islands in New horizons, or other Nintendo games. Animal crossing released for £49.99 - it included no microtransactions. Players had to wait real time to amass in game currency 'bells' and encouraged players to limit long play sessions.
